These striking hoop earrings are a sophisticated homage to the 19th-century Archaeological Revival movement.
This era was defined by legendary Roman jewellers like Fortunato Pio Castellani and Giacinto Melillo, who dedicated their lives to recreating the "lost" techniques of ancient Greek and Etruscan goldsmiths.
The design is a faithful recreation of the Hellenistic tapering hoop (3rd–2nd Century BCE).
While the originals were discovered in the ancient burial sites of Magna Graecia, it was the Castellani workshop that brought this aesthetic back to life for the Victorian elite, sparking a global obsession with classical antiquities.
Unlike standard replicas, these earrings feature a high-contrast Mixed Metal construction that emphasises the sculptural detail of the antiquity.
The Heads are expertly cast in oxidised bronze, these represent the Maenads (followers of Dionysus). The dark, patinated finish mimics the "aged bronze" look of artefacts recovered from archaeological excavations.
The tapering bodies are finished in a rich, warm gold plating, recreating the opulent glow of 22k ancient gold.
The "collars" feature meticulous beaded textures, a nod to the granulation and filigree techniques that Melillo and Castellani famously mastered.
