Fabulous vintage 1920's Silk Wedding Dress in rich champagne colour and spectacular pearl beads works on the top and train ( ∼2200pcs of beads).
The dress consists of three separate pieces: a top, a skirt and a train.
The sleeveless top has a straight shape and a V-shaped neck. Both neck line and armholes have hidden topstitching. Back of the top features hidden span buttons closure at the back centre.
The top features the LHS "apron" which is grown on at the front and at the back it fastens to the top with hidden snap buttons. The lower edge of the "apron" is rounded both at the front and back. The hem of the apron is 5cm turned and features hidden top stitching.
The top features a wonderful pearl beads applique on the RHS. The side seams of the top are slightly ruffled.
The straight shaped skirt has a LHS side seam and a hidden snap buttons closure at the back (on the left hand side). On the RHS of the waist the seam is slightly ruffled. This was made, because this part of the skirt is visible in the "window" under the bead work when top is worn. Skirt fastens to the top/apron at the back on hidden snap buttons, I think it was made to make an illusion of one-piece dress and prevent top from going up. The snap buttons all around the dress are placed exactly as it was made originally, however you can reposition them by your choice.
The skirt has a 14,5cm hem turn and features hidden top stitching. It allows you to lengthen the skirt, if you would like to do so.
The marvellous detachable train attaches to the back of the shoulders on 4pcs snap buttons. The bottom part of the train features an amazingly beautiful pearl beads work and pearl fringes. 3/4 of the train back side is lined in silk chiffon and finishes with an flower applique of chiffon and beads. The bottom of the trains back is lined in silk, fully covering the bak side of the beads work.
When dress is worn, the hem of the top apron and the hem of the skirt are almost in line.
The dress is unlined, all of the topstitches are hidden, or "invisible".
The dress closes only with snap buttons, it makes it very comfortable and easy to wear. You can also move the position of the snap buttons if you wish.
95% of the dress is originally hand sewn! Just imagine the amount of time and skill level that was put in it. Only side and shoulder seams of the top were machine stitched. All of the rest, including all bead works and delicate chiffon train lining were hand sewn.
During restoration of the dress, I had to reinforce seams of the skirt, including side seam, skirt closure and skirt waist. The side seam of the skirt was machine stitched to make it stronger and it was added a binding to the skirt waist line and skirt closure, as previously there were just the raw edges. The inner binding of the armholes was also reinforced with a machine stitching, however the finishing topstitching was made by hand as it was originally. No other action was taken using the sewing machine.
The original pearl beads used for the appliques were so fragile and damaged so badly, that they crumbled at every touch. They would not survive any cleaning, or restoration processes. So, it was a hard decision to take, but I had to replace all of the beads with new ones. The new plastic pearl beads were matched in size and shape as close, as possible. The pattern of the beads work 100% replicates the original! The fringes work pattern is the same as the original too.
I have worked with this dress with as much respect as possible to the original sewing masters and trying to save as much of original state as it was only possible to do.
Measurements: All measurements are taken flat. The silk doesn't stretch and the shape of the dress is straight/rectangular, as it was stylish in 20s, so it has to be loose fitted:
V-neck circumference - 68,5cm
Shoulders seam to seam (measuring at the back) - 28,5cm
Armhole circumference - 48cm
Bust (armpit point) - 85cm
Waist (top) - 75cm
Waist (skirt) - 72cm
Hips (skirt) 15cm down the waist - 95cm
Skirt length - 72cm
CB Length - 113,5cm
Train length - 183cm
Please double check all the measurements before purchase and let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding measurements/sizing.
Condition: for its age and this kind of materials it is in great vintage condition.
There are few flows, some of them a little noticeable, another almost invisible. On the LHS of the top, a bit below of the shoulder seam there is an area where the silk has thinned. It was not hole yet, but very close to it. I have reinforced this area with a silk thread of matching colour. It looks now like a scuff. This is the biggest "imperfection" that you can find in this dress, however it could be easily covered with a flower boutonniere, bead applique, or veil, or you can leave it as it is, if it doesn't bother you. There is one more needle head size scuff that was reinforced at the lower LHS of the top, which is nearly not visible. Some other insignificant pin holes and micro scuffs here and there (nothing large that catches attention), but don't forget that it is a 100 years old natural silk fabric which is very delicate even nowadays. There was a hole on the chiffon lining on the back side of the train: since chiffon is even more thin and delicate than silk and I wasn't sure that a simple stitching will be enough to prevent further break, I've used a fusing material to seal this hole. Since this are is at the back side of the train, it isn't visible while wearing. There are some colour/water marks and foxing around the top and apron both front and back side, these are so faint that you can notice them only in close (like 10cm-15cm distance). Also, some foxing marks at the top of the train, very faint too.
Please refer to the last photos and their description for reference. If you would like to see additional videos and photos of the imperfections, or any other details, please contact me.
Overall, for its age of around 100 years, the dress is in beautiful condition - it has timeless design, it's a masterpiece of the period hand sewing art, it has 1920s glamour vibe and, what is more important, it is absolutely wearable. Truly speaking, if it survived with no flows at all and saved all of its original beads, it would be worth to become a museum piece.
I can't imagine how much time and skill it took to create this piece of art, I can only say that it took me around month and around 2200pcs of beads just to recreate the bead work, and I was only following the previous steps...
The gown is hand washed and ready for shipping. I would recommend to consult with your local dry cleaning company before purchasing, as they can tell you if it will be possible to remove foxing and colour marks completely.
