Unique antique gold ring with flat cut amethysts and a seed pearl, c.1893.
The ring has a beautiful four-leafs shape and Middle-Eastern style.
Decorated with cut flat Amethysts of round and drop shapes and a natural Seed Pearl.
The Amethysts have unusual pinky-purple shade and a wonderful lustre, the pearl has a tender teal undertone.
The top of the ring is not glossy, but has a matt and uneven patterned surface around the stones. This adds a beautiful structure to the ring.
The side prongs remind cats' or lions' paws; at the back of the ring there is a horizontal bar, which was made, most probably for reinforcement.
The top of the ring is made of yellow gold, and the band and prongs - of more reddish gold. Together with a particular stones setting, it leads to a feeling that this is a conversion from a different piece of jewellery.
It was widely practiced to convert a single earring into ring, or, for a father, to convert his cuff links into earrings, or rings for his daughters.
I'm listing this ring as 19th century, however the top of the ring itself is most probably more older and begun its life as a different piece of jewellery.
Whoever made a conversion into the ring, was a great master, as the band is made so professionally, and looks so organic together with the top. You can't find any traces of conversion, or previous jewellery attachment points, so neatly it was made.
If not the gold colour difference, I would never have a thought that it could be a conversion.
It is truly one of a kind piece that will catch all eyes on it!
Great antique condition - one of the drop shaped amethyst has a micro chip at the tip, which isn't noticeable while wearing, however should be noted for a full and clear description. No other chips, or cracks. Normal signs of wear consistent with age.
Hallmarks - being checked by a jeweller it is 18K gold, it also has a hardly readable French "Owl" hallmark (it was used in France from 1893).
